Funding for MA Students Funding for M.A. Students Masters students are rarely given full funding, except for those in the MA/PhD program (see below). Some masters students are offered a partial teaching assistantship and/or a small stipend during the first year. Guarantees are not made that the same funding will be available during the second year, though some effort is made to sustain meritorious students at this level. Out-of-state students are subject to tuition for the first year only, but the cost of tuition is high (approx. $4,082 per quarter). Teaching assistantships (when available) are usually offered for one or two quarters only. They pay $4,785.66 per quarter plus health insurance and about half of the in-state fees. During the quarters when they are not working as teaching assistantship, M.A. students must pay in-state fees and health insurance costs. Fellowship competitions are not usually open to MA students. Those M.A. students who go on to the Ph.D. program at UCSB will then be offered a guarantee of at least two years of funding. M.A. students typically finance their degree work with federally funded student loans. See Loans for information about loans. Well-qualified applicants to the MA program who have experience in the costume shop or technical theatre areas are occasionally promised a full teaching assistantship in those areas, involving the TA salary ($4,785.66 per quarter), health insurance ($473 per quarter). Students in this category should draw attention to the fact in their application. Funding for M.A./Ph.D. Since the MA/PhD program is intended for highly competitive students with a BA who seem already capable of doctoral-level work, the assumption is that they will go on to complete both degrees on this campus. Although this is not a guarantee and requires the passing of the entrance examination, as well as the fulfillment of M.A. requirements, funding is planned in advance for a total of four years (three years of course work and a fourth of dissertation work). This funding will come in some combination of fellowship and teaching assistantship. A fifth year of funding is a possibility but not guaranteed.
