Financial Aid > Tuition & fees

California residents who enter the graduate programs are responsible for paying in-state fees and health insurance costs. Often these are covered by fellowships or teaching assistantships (see below--Funding).

United States citizens who enter the program from any other state are subject to out-of-state tuition for the first year only, during which they can establish California residency by registering to vote, getting a drivers' license, etc. International students with non-immigrant student visas cannot obtain residency in this way and so are subject to the out-of-state tuition during all the years in which they are enrolled. (Contact the office of international students and scholars for information regarding international student expenses and visas at OISS

Actual costs vary somewhat from year to year. The estimated fees for 2007-08 are as follows:

For CA residents:
UC Mandatory Fees $8,069.10
Health Insurance $2,034.00
Total $10,103.10
For non-CA residents (U.S. citizens) 1st year only (for foreign students indefinitely):
UC Mandatory Fees $8,363.10
Heath Insurance $2,034.00
Tuition $14,694.00
Total $25,091.10
