DANCE REQUIREMENTS

To prepare for the major, students must complete a variety of lower-division (freshman and sophomore level) dance courses including the modern dance and intermediate ballet sequences, fundamentals of choreography and improvisation. Students must also complete courses in dramatic art, such as theatre workshop and practicums, and kinesiology. The BA degree requires completion fo 36-upper-division (junior and senior level) units in dance; the BFA requires completion of 68 upper division units in dance.

To complete a Bachelor of Arts--Dance , the following courses are required:

Preparation for the Bachelor of Art (BA) major.
Dance 36, 45, 47A-B-C-D-E-F, 50, 51, 56A-B-C-D-E-F, 58, 70; Theater 19, 23D, 2 units of 29 series or 49; Music 15; Exercise and Sports Studies 47.

Upper division BA major.
Note: Technical ability and theoretical knowledge must be demonstrated to the satisfaction of the dance faculty before entrance to upper-division study. Students should contact the dance faculty for program planning advice, in order to insure the best possible sequence of study. Thirty-six upper-division units are required, as follows:

One course from: Dance 145A-B-H-M-W or 157
149 (1 unit)
151A-B-C
156A-B-C
as well as 10 additional units selected from Dance 145A*-B*-H*-M*-W*,
146, 147A-B-C, 147PA-PB-PC, 149, 151D-E-T, 156A-B-C-D-E-F, 157*, 158, 160,
161A, 163, 171, 172, 186, 189, 190, 193H, 194, 199.

* if not chosen above.

Preparation for the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) Major

Dance 36, 45, 47A-B-C, 47D-E-F, 50, 51, 56 A-B-C, 56 D-E-F 70; Theater 5, 19, 23D, two units of 29 series or 49; Music 15 ; Exercise and Sports Studies 47.

Upper Division BFA Major:

Note: Entry into the BFA. program is by the special assessment process described above, and completion of the program depends upon successful progress and recommendation of the dance faculty. Assessment of a BFA student's progress is made on a quarterly basis and provision is made for students who appear not to be able to complete the BFA program requirements to graduate with the less specialized BA degree providing they maintain the standards for that degree.

68 upper-division units are required as follows: One course from Dance 145 A-B-M-W and 157, 147A-B-C, 149 (4 units), 151A-B-C, 156 A-B-C, 156 D-E-F, 158, 171, 172, 191, as well as twelve additional units selected from Dance 145 A-B-M-W (if not chosen above), 147ABC beyond the six units used in area F, 147 PA-PB-PC, 149, 151D, 151E, 151T, 157 (if not chosen above), 160, 161A, 163, 190, 193H, 194 and 199

 

 

 

Special Projects

Dance majors nominated by faculty may undertake a senior honors project. The project must represent a significant advanced undertaking in either academic research or creative endeavor. Students who complete their project to the satisfaction of a three-member faculty committee are awarded Distinction in the Major upon graduation.

Advising

For initial counseling, contact the departmental undergraduate advisor who will assign each student to a faculty advisor; future counseling will be handled by the departmental undergraduate advisor and the faculty advisor.
